When corporations decide to take a pro-active approach to preventing losses, Robinson Investigation's consultants can assist you in determining exactly what measures need to be taken to prevent loss.  Generally this will involve the development of a comprehensive security plan for your facility or business.

A "Security Plan" consists of three components:

1. Physical Security - this is a system of tangible countermeasures designed to control access and to prevent the interruption of operations.
2. Personnel Security - this is a set of practices to ensure that employees help in the work of the organization rather than act as an obstacle to it.   This includes hiring standards, codes of conduct, performance requirements, investigation practices and disciplinary actions.
3. Information Security - this deals with the protection of product information and other trade secrets, client and consumer lists, marketing plans, financial data and other types of proprietary information, which ensures the growth and operation of the organization.  

This approach works well proactively but can also be utilized in a reactionary mode, following an event of loss.   

Facility & Security Assessments

The first step in developing a good, working security plan is to conduct an in-dpeth assessment of the current situations, policies and practices.   Robinson Investigations utilizes a protocol developed through years of experience to conduct a thorough security assessment.  These assessments can be carried out on a number of different levels or against different criteria:

We approach each assessment using a common protocol that follows a similar path.  This is very important when working with large organizations where many buildings and departments might be examined and need to be measured against a common set of guidelines in order to accurately compare and contrast varying levels of security.   To achieve this we generally begin by analyzing existing policy, and then comparing that to actual "in-the-field" procedure.  This is then examined to determine:

1. Was the policy followed?
2. Did the actual procedure achieve the intended result, regardless of its ignorance of corporate policy?
3. If not, then how best should procedure be altered to follow policy and achieve the intended result?
4. If so, then how best should policy be altered to maintain corporate vision and secured standards while using existing procedure?
5. Do both policy and procedure exist within a satisfactory security framework?

This is a brief overview of the first steps involved in a Robinson Investigations facility assessment, and the process becomes more intense as it progresses.  Some of the particular areas with which we concern ourselves are those areas that our experience has taught us will be problematic.

Once an assessment has been completed, the next phase is to develop a "Security Plan" for the corporation and to implement recomendations. The final phase is to train staff members in how best to avoid future problems and what tools are available should a problem occur.  These training seminars are usually taught in a small-group and informal fashion.

Externally Driven Loss

Internally Driven Loss

Oftentimes, losses that occur in the workplace are the product of internal thefts or frauds.  Generally when one employee is successfully stealing from an employer, it does not take long for the activity to be copied by other employees.   In recent investigations of internal thefts it was discovered that approximately 65% of total employees were involved in ongoing thefts to one extent or another.  In almost every case ALL employees were aware of the ongoing trouble.

Preventing Thieves From Stealing Your Information
